In the wake of worldwide economic turmoil, Eastern European energy disputes and tremendous political upheaval in the Middle East - and on the eve of the next chapter in American leadership, already faced with charged, contentious and vitally important decisions to be made, I leave you to ponder today's thought of the day, (re)discovered amid the sacrificed trees collecting on my desk:
We must always take sides.
Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
- Elie Wiesel
There is, perhaps, both danger and truth in this: the danger eased only by the intelligence of choices made and actions taken when we have taken sides.
